Constable Denton, emeritus and his new wife were so excited about remodeling the
Constable's old house and changing its appearance.  The retired Constable had lived
there for quite a few years and now with his new wife they wanted to make a home
together, so together they designed an addition and planned on renovating a few rooms
in the house.  If you’ve been reading along then you know from a previous article that
the plans they made went very sour when a fraudulent contractor took a lot of money
on good faith and a bogus contract and left the Constable and his wife wondering what
to do.  The actual crime committed against them was only the beginning of their
problems.

Constable Denton,
emeritus called an old friend at the Dayton Police Department and
asked for a police report be written since that is the first step in which to get the ball
of justice rolling so to speak.  His friend, Darrell Bell, now the investigator at Dayton
Police Department, reluctantly agreed to do the report if he and his wife could be at
the police department in 20 minutes.  This, of course, is exactly what they did.  Within
minutes they were at the Dayton City Police Department to get that report, the first
step to getting justice upon the crook.

However, once they arrived at the police department, things went terribly ugly for the
Dentons.  The so-called “old friend” of the ole Constable had a different attitude with
the Dentons, one he’d never really had before when talking to them.  The Dentons were
told by the investigator, (never really a friend at all, come to find out) that they would
have to wait for a few minutes for a patrolman to come in and take their report.  They
were told that they had a “chain of command”.  There was another officer, J. C. Byrd,
there in the lobby of the police department lounging in a chair and a fireman, Dennis
Kirby, was sitting at the receptionist’s desk.  Where the receptionist was, no one
knows.  It just looked as though the lobby of the police department was a place to
“hang out” for these three men.  As the retired Constable and his wife stood there
waiting for the patrolman to arrive, Constable Denton,
emeritus looked over at his wife
and told her that she was about to learn how the law was done here in the south.  Being
already upset with some things that had happened throughout her short residency in
Dayton (I will write about those later), she looked over at her husband and stated that
she “already knows how it is, and it sucks”.

Let me tell you folks, once she said that, the Investigator Bell launched up out of his
chair, pointed directly at Mrs. Denton and said in a loud firm voice, “Oh no, that’s not
how things are gonna go down here.”  He then slammed open the police department’s
glass door (lucky for him it didn’t break) and pointed at Mrs. Denton and shouted, “You,
you get out of here right now!”  No doubt stunned, Mrs. Denton in shock stated, “No.
Why?”  She did not yell back at him because his abrupt behavioral change startled
her.   Once again, he pointed to her and yelled at her to "Get out!  Get out now!" This
time walking up to her.  Let me make clear in your mind readers,  that she did not
become unruly, disrespectful, or challenging, she was in shock.  As the investigator
approached her telling her to get out, she was asking him why she had to leave.  He then
got within inches of her face and told her that if she did not leave he would have the
officer that was sitting down, who then stood up, arrest her and take her to jail.  Not
believing what she was hearing, shocked, and knowing all rights she had were now being
thrown out the door,  Investigator Bell just slammed open, she asked him, “On what
grounds?  Why?”  As she stood there with the investigator’s hot breath on her face and
his firm grip on her elbow and scared to death of what was about to happen, she heard
her loving husband, calmly and softly say to her in a tone of voice only a wife would
recognize in her husband say, “Honey, let’s go, let’s go now”.

Darrell Bell then leaned up and away from Mrs. Denton's face, released his grip on her
arm and stepped away from her.  Mrs. Denton looked around the investigator in the
direction of the voice of her husband and stepped toward him.  They began walking out
and she had to turn and ask him a few more questions, while departing from the police
station, “What did I do wrong that you would throw me in jail?  Where are we, Nazi
Germany?”  All the while Constable Denton
gently guiding his wife out of the Dayton
Police Department.

Being that the retired Constable has lived in Dayton all his life and he indeed does know
“how they’ve always done things around here”.  He knew his wife would indeed and could
go to jail for simply making a statement and asking questions.  Oh yeah, don’t forget,
they were there to get a police report, which the investigator successfully kept them
from getting.

Folks this story goes on, but I am going to leave  you with this bit of information for
now.  Think about it, what if this had been you?  Oh I’m sure a few of you big brave men
out there might SAY there is no way anyone would put your wife in jail, but let me tell
you, it is really different when you are actually WEARING the shoes of those we talk
about.  Perhaps Mrs. Denton should not have made that remark that rubbed the
investigator the wrong way, but did he really have to bully her?  Could he not have been
a bit more professional or perhaps understanding because after all, he did know the
details of what happened to them and how much money was stolen from them.   My
point is this folks, the investigator was out of line, uncaring, and unprofessional, least
of all patient or having an ounce of tolerance.  I mean really, isn’t tolerance and
patience a couple of very important characteristics our policemen should hold?  If a
police officer is having personal problems, or heck, even just tired or having a bad day,
don’t the taxpayers deserve an officer that can be professional enough to control his
temper?  Of course the taxpayers deserve this.

Really now, the Dentons posed no threat of any kind, were not aggressive, loud, or
belligerent.  They were invited there to get something they desperately needed in
order to get justice for the crime committed upon them.  They were not there to cause
trouble.  This is what the Dentons want so much for people to realize about all of this.
They weren’t looking for trouble.  They were looking for help!  Sadly, because of “Old
Politics” and cronyism, the retired Constable could not get help.

From there, the retired Constable and his wife went to the Mayor’s home, who the
former Constable  had a very amicable relationship with for years.  He knew they could
go there and get help.

This is where I end the Denton's story for today.  Please come back again to read the
continuing “saga” (joking here) (sorta) of the Denton's story of Dayton and why they
eventually leave.  Thanks for reading.  Please continue to support the website and read
us each day.  We enjoying telling stories and enjoy even more knowing we are getting
word out that if you have been mistreated by your local community’s government or
officials, as they say in Dayton, YOU AIN’T ALONE, we know your grief, frustration,
and regret.
