Dayton Mayor and Chief Sneed
react to the Dentons
Hi Again readers of the Dayton Daily News.  The last time you were here you
stuck with me on my longest, latest edition of the Denton’s dilemma in Dayton
and left off with Mrs. Denton’s presentation to the Dayton Council of her
terrible incident with Investigator Darrell Bell at the Dayton Police
Department.

After telling her story, Mayor Bobby Vincent asked the Chief who (was
seated in his usual front row seat) if he had anything he would like to say to
what Mrs. Denton had just expressed had happened to her in his police
department. Chief Sneed stood up and said that “No, he had nothing to say.”
He then sat back down.   Can you believe that?  His basically second or third
in charge guy was just accused of misconduct and he had “nothing to say.”
The Mayor then addressed Mrs. Denton telling her that he would take her
complaint under advisement.  He then asked if they could take her statement
that she had been reading from for their files.  Mrs. Denton had no problem
with this because actually she had made a copy for them to make her
complaints public record.  She then handed her complaint to the very kind
City Recorder who each time she has ever spoke before council has had
nothing but warm smiles and friendly hellos for her.  Just before Mrs.
Denton was going to sit down, Chief Police then stood and told the Mayor
that actually, he did have something to say.  He stated in general that the
Dentons had made some pretty serious allegations about his department and
that they “didn't have anything to hide” and that he would be willing to have
a meeting with Mrs. Denton about this.  The Mayor then looked at Mrs.
Denton and again told her that the matter will be taken under advisement.

Okay, so with my inquisitive mind I ask myself, “Why did the Chief not say
that in the first place, why the delay in his reaction?”  If they had nothing to
hide why did he have to sit there for five minutes to come up with something
to say?  He sure was not short of words the day he marched out of the
police department right behind Roy Denton while all of his officers
practically had their noses smudged up against the windows peering out.   So
now why the hesitation?  Was he actually shocked that a woman had the guts
to get up there and complain about one of his officers who has told other
citizens of Dayton that his department has no areas in which they need to
improve upon?  Well, this is my column and this is what I think.  I think that
the Chief knows what happened was wrong, even though he agrees with how
his officers behaved because he actually despises Constable Roy Denton.  It
is pretty much common knowledge that Constable Denton has a history with
the Chief’s daddy as they were once political rivals, whereupon his daddy
Leon Sneed did defeat Roy Denton in the 1998 sheriff election. Then again,
at that point in time and interestingly enough, Roy Denton was a current
DEMOCRAT Constable but was running as an elected DEMOCRAT in the
REPUBLICAN primary against Sneed. Now exactly, what sort of election such
as that is even heard of other than here in good old Rhea County? A
Democrat office holder running for another office as a Republican???

However, if anyone had a grudge shouldn’t it be the loser in the contest, not
the winner’s son?  How silly.  You see folks, Constable Roy Denton has always
had the brains, the gumption, and the gonads to say exactly how he feels and
what he thinks about things that are wrong.  He questions people in positions
of authority over not everything they do, but just the things that do not
seem right.

So here you have it folks, the incident with Investigator Darrell Bell, the
BIG mistake of confiding in Mayor Vincent, speaking before the council, and
being told by Mayor Vincent himself that the matter would be taken under
"advisement", and the Chief offering a meeting with Mrs. Denton.  When the
Mayor told Mrs. Denton the council would take the matter under advisement
she felt as though something was going to be done.  Folks, I have looked up
the word “advisement” in the dictionary and do you know what the definition
is?  It means “careful consideration”.  Okay, so what does this exactly mean
they are going to actually do?  As of this date, I guess it is still under
advisement because ABSOLUTELY NOTHING HAS BEEN DONE AND MRS.
DENTON HAS YET TO HEAR FROM THE COUNCIL OR THE CHIEF FOR
THIS SO-CALLED “MEETING” HE OFFERED TO HER BEFORE THE
COUNCIL.

To me, what the mayor really means when he puts someone’s complaint,
concern, or comments under advisement, it just means he is going to be
“careful” as to how he is going to “consider” the matter at hand, or in
layman's terms, it means he is putting you off, blowing your issue off as
unimportant and of low priority, if ever handled at all.  I really hope the
citizens of Dayton take who they are going to elect for Mayor under “
careful
consideration
when it is time to vote.  So remember this folks, if Mayor
Bob Vincent ever tells you he will take what you just told him under
advisement, it is my advice to you, get an answer then and there as to what
his next step is going to be in his advisement schedule, otherwise, you will
never get an answer.

Okay, that wraps it up again folks.  Next time, I will be telling you how the
Chief that did not really have much to say at the meeting, couldn’t seem to
stop talking about him to a reporter of the local newspaper that came out two
days after the meeting.  Also, you will be reading about the next stage of the
Denton’s Dilemma in Dayton, when a former Constable starts his own legal
proceedings to prosecute the criminal that robbed him and his wife and how
he had to take matters in to his own hands to get justice.  Maybe we all need
Constables BACK in office.

You will get to read how he and his wife had to basically “stand trial” for a
crime that was committed
AGAINST them, not BY them.  Oh yeah, another
hurdle for the Dentons.  It is almost so sad and unfair, and the justice
system so pathetic that it is almost funny, well not quite.
