I have lived in Dayton for several years and am amazed at things I continue to see going
on in the political arena (circus) here in my community.  It is my opinion that we have a
tight knit group of individuals with personal agendas running our pretty little Christian
town.  The only hard copy newspaper we have in our city is biased and continues to tell
one side of the story.  The side of the story that The Herald-News wants to promote.

The April 23rd edition of the Herald, head article, first paragraph.  Open your eyes
people.  Perfect example of how things are run here.  The mayor is quoted by the Herald
as saying "Jim and (Vice Mayor) John Heath and I have been talking back and forth
quite a bit on this."  Something is very wrong in that statement, not to mention
OBVIOUSLY non-democratic.  Since when should two out of our short-membered four
man council be talking amongst themselves OUTSIDE of meetings and WITHOUT the
full council at hand.  Are these private dealings NOW AT A STATE LEVEL?  It is right
there before your eyes Rhea County/Dayton Citizens.  I personally heard the Mayor say
at a council meeting at how he could not believe how simple the charter makes it for
someone to become a council member.  Just what does that statement by him mean?

In an article printed after that meeting the Herald News Editor's view printed what they
thought the qualifications the next council member should have.  They were essentially,
a  comfortably retired,  businessman.  I'm not kidding.  Can't have someone that is of the
average age, average income, making an honest living here in the city help make
decisions for the working man can we?  We have to have a retired, greedy, arrogant
man sitting in there deciding how much more taxes the average working family is being
forced to pay.

We are being consistently taxed to the limit, fuel prices are rising constantly, and simply
purchasing groceries for the average family is becoming more and more difficult.  The
Herald News has the nerve to print the brazened statement of our beloved mayor.  I say
how dare Bob Vincent pretend to care about Dayton when all the while his ego is
plastered within the stories of the Herald News.  He has become more and more
careless about his behavior as mayor and certainly more arrogant in his remarks to the
public.  Our mayor, who has yet to fill a fifth council seat is allowing decisions and deals
to be made without a full council.

Our beloved popular Mayor obviously has been in his comfort zone for so long that he
has lost genuine concern for the community.  He is more focused on pleasing the
"good ole boys".  I hope the Herald News continues to publish the arrogance of our
local officials.  It is my hope that ONE DAY the people will wake up from their stupor and
actually vote. VOTE FOR A CHANGE in this community that is slowly sinking.  This is a
community on a main highway that offers nothing new to people traveling through here.
Historic downtown Dayton is not enough to keep this community afloat.  This town
shuts down at approximately 9:00 p.m. seven days a week.  To have any type of
entertainment or decent meal, one must travel essentially to Chattanooga.  We are not
keeping up with the times and the same ole boys running our town are sinking us.
