Is the Herald-News trying to pull a "fast one", again?
I was doing a little research looking for some interesting things to inject my opinion into and happened upon a rather intriguing story. Not so much was it the story that gave me the subject matter for my opinion, but the timing and reasoning for the story in the first place.
The story in question is a story written by a fellow named "Michael Reneau" who either works for the Herald-News, free lances or something. It really doesn't matter to me what this dude does there as I am not impressed with anyone at that place. The two fellows I was interested in being Ed Emens and John Carpenter are GONE, period. Thanks to a website called RheaCountyNewspaper.com shining a bright light on a rats nest, well, it seems these two characters were fired, quit, retired or whatever term they want to place on their removal. The bottom line is to me it is as refreshing as popping a pimple on my backside.
Now getting back to my opinion on this matter of concern to me I would like to focus on a story written by Michael Reneau and published in the Herald-News on January 27, 2009entitled "Nurse's license suspended again".
What caught my eye concerning this story was the name Bonnie Jean Lewallen. The story was about a nurse named Bonnie Lewallen who had her license suspended not once, but twice. The story also pretty much made Bonnie Lewallen sound like some sort of "drug dealing pot head". Although the Herald-News thought it was newsworthy enough to print this story about this "Bonnie Lewallen" lady for a SECOND suspension, for some reason the FIRST suspension was back in May 2007 but for some reason it wasn't printed. Why?
The story refers to this Bonnie Lewallen in a strong way, but a truthful way. I went to the Board of Nursing for the Tennessee Department of Health website and did some digging myself. I was able to find the actual Consent Orders that Mr. Reneau was using as his information source. Sure enough, on May 31, 2007 Bonnie J. Lewallen had her nursing license suspended by reason of:
"Guilty of unprofessional conduct; making false or materially incorrect, inconsistent, or unintelligible entries in any patient records or in the records of any health care facility, school, institution, or other work place location pertaining to the obtaining, possessing or administration of any controlled substance as defined in the Federal Controlled Substances Act; unauthorized use or removal of narcotics, drugs, supplies, or equipment from any health care facility, school, institution, or other work place location: and engaging in acts of dishonesty related to practice of nursing". This "reasoning" is taken straight from the official website quoting the official Consent Order which you can read in it's entirety here. READ CONSENT ORDER
A simple archive search of any person with the last name "LEWALLEN" reveals that apparently the Herald-News didn't think that this reasoning for a nurse to have her license suspended was NOT newsworthy. Click here and go perform a search yourself.
According to the official website referenced above, Bonnie J. Lewallen apparently had the suspended license modified to "being on probation" effective January 24, 2008 which was well over a year ago. In spite of this, where is the evidence that the Herald-News printed such a story of obvious public interest?
According to the same official Tennessee website referenced above, Bonnie J. Lewallen was once again suspended on December 3, 2008 where the Board gave the reasoning for that action as:
"Unprofessional conduct; has violated or attempted violation, directly or indirectly, or assisting in or abetting the violation or, or conspiring to violate, any provision of this chapter or any lawful order of the board issued pursuant thereto". Again, this "reasoning is taken straight from the official website quoting the official Consent Order which you can read in it's entirety here.READ SECOND CONSENT ORDER HERE.
So what is my beef with all of this? Just why did the discipline of a nurse with the name of Bonnie J. Lewallen have to do with anything? Hey, glad you asked. Here's my theory on that:
On January 16, 2009 the Herald-News printed a story titled "Dayton City election slate finalized for April". Click it and read it for yourself. In that story it told of the Dayton mayor election having only TWO candidates. One was Bobby D. Vincent who is married to Maxine Vincent and Gary Louallen who is married to BONNIE LOUALLEN. See anything freaky about the neglect of the Herald-News printing the nurse's serious problems in 2007 or 2008? However when the Herald-News printed the story letting all of Dayton know who the candidates for mayor was then all of a sudden they for some reason decided to dig up news that began almost two years ago in May 2007 and intertwined that OLD news into the OLD news that happened in December 2008 and then print it just eleven days AFTER we all find out that Gary Louallen is running against the "good old boy" Bobby D. Vincent.
Folks, you think what you want and craft your own opinions. However, my opinion is this...
Bonnie J. Lewallen got into trouble with a Tennessee State Board in 2007 and twice in 2008 and the Herald- News for whatever their reasons apparently did NOT print the stories at all. If they did then it sure isn't in their own archives they place online. Then once the candidates were "finalized" for mayor and the story printed on January 16, 2009 just several days later this fellow named Michael Reneau reported this story. Personally, it looks to me like this reporter is a Bob Vincent supporter and/or the Herald-News is as well and used this old Bonnie Lewallen story to create confusion within the minds of the voting public. Think about it folks, I do not even know Bonnie Louallen or Bonnie Lewallen and I even had to take a double look and think about this for a few minutes trying to figure out if Gary Louallen's wife was this same "nurse" being scoffed by this Herald-News reporter.
I can just hear it now. People sitting in church talking about a mayor election and one of them mentions the name "Gary Louallen". Now for those of us that do not know his wife Bonnie, couldn't it be real easy to mix up Bonnie Louallen with Bonnie Lewallen? Certainly it could. To me, that sounds EXACTLY like typical politics around here.
People, I have lived here for my whole life and I am not completely stupid. To me, someone for some reason discovered a slick way to denounce the name of a mayor candidates wife without actually doing so. If not, well it sure looks that way. I think the Herald-News in all fairness should print an apology for any confusion they may have caused by reporting a story about a "Bonnie" in a town that will read it and simply spread the gossip of the name, not the spelling of it.
