Constable Denton, emeritus and Wife Visit Mayor of Dayton at Home
|
Well faithful readers of The Dayton Daily News, first of all, thank you for
clicking back to our site to read what the old Constable Denton, emeritus,
and his wife have to say. Again, we can’t tell you how much we appreciate
your following us along on our little journey and listening to the tales of
their saga while residing in Dayton.
As you recall, we left off with Mrs. Denton almost getting thrown in the
slammer by the very short-fused Investigator Bell of the Dayton Police
Department. Feeling like she had just narrowly escaped a Nazi
Interrogation room, Constable Denton escorted the very upset Mrs. Denton
to their car. His wife was visibly shaken from the encounter she just had
with the investigator angered him deeply. After helping her in to the car
and soothing her as best he could he immediately began thinking of what
steps he should take next. He told Mrs. Denton that no one was going to
treat his wife this way and the next thing to do would be to go to the
Investigator’s boss. At this point you might think they were going to speak
to the Chief of the Dayton Police Department, Chris Sneed. They would
have had he been in the office when this happened, but as was the usual, it
is very hard to catch the Chief of Dayton Police in his office. He is in the
office before sunrise and well out of there by lunch so as to pursue other
financial endeavors such as construction and realty business, at least rumor
has it.
They immediately went to Mayor Bob Vincent's home and found his lovely
wife, Maxine at home. Constable Denton knows her very well as she is a
teacher and his three children each had her in school when they were
growing up. Mrs. Denton sat in the car as Constable Denton got out of the
car and approached Mrs. Vincent doing something in the garage. They both
came out of the garage and stood in the driveway as Constable Denton
confided in Mrs. Vincent what had just happened. Mrs. Denton was too
upset and still crying so remained in the car but they were within hearing
distance and she could hear their conversation. Mrs. Vincent listened
intently to what Constable Denton was telling her had just happened to Mrs.
Denton and she expressed regret that his wife had been treated that way
and that there had been a few complaints about this particular police
officer lately and that Mayor Vincent was in the early stages of figuring
out what action to take with the Dayton Police Department. The mayor’s
wife told the Constable to feel free to call that evening after 8:00 because
they had an engagement they had to attend but would be home later in the
evening and to please call and speak to the mayor himself about this. She
offered her sympathy to the Dentons and expressed her regret for the
Constable's wife while smiling and giving Mrs. Denton a friendly wave to
her as she remained in the car trying to dry her tears. The Constable
thanked Mrs. Vincent and returned to their car.
On their way home the Dentons were still in shock, and once again,
wondering what in the world they were going to do to try and get the
money back that was stolen from them. They could not get a police report
from their very own Dayton Police Department and retaining a lawyer would
be expensive, and besides this was indeed criminal, not civil. They wanted
this crook punished for his crime upon them, not sued! When they
returned home, the Constable's cousin, Timmy happened to be in the front
yard. Timmy saw how upset his cousin’s wife was and immediately asked
the Constable what was going on. The retired Constable explained that
they had hired a contractor that was a crook and they had gone to the
Dayton Police Department to get a police report so as to press criminal
charges on this man but once again, were unable to attain such report.
Timmy began comforting Mrs. Denton by reassuring her that it would all be
alright and that they would still get the house done and not to worry. If it
were not for Cousin Timmy in all of this, they would not have seen their
dream come to be. Through Timmy’s knowledge of construction, his father-
in-law, and their friends, the Dentons could not have had the project
finished. They did work up front for the Dentons and arranged to be paid
when the Dentons could get the money back to pay them. They did this for
the Dentons based on love and trust of family and friendship. To this day
the Dentons have not forgotten that. After Timmy told Mrs. Denton what
he would do to help she felt a little bit relieved but was still visibly shaken
by almost being jailed.
Later that evening, as instructed to do so by the mayor’s wife, Mrs. Denton
called the mayor’s home but he had not returned yet. She left a heartfelt
message for the mayor and a request for help in this situation. Within 15
minutes of her calling the mayor, he indeed called her back. The
conversation between the mayor and Mrs. Denton lasted approximately 10
minutes and Mrs. Denton was reassured by the mayor that there would be
something done about it. He told her that her complaint could be very
helpful in finally getting the “ball rolling” at getting some things changed at
the Dayton City Police Department. Mrs. Denton informed the Mayor that
she and her husband had tried to contact the Chief Of Dayton Police on a
number of occasions but he was never in the office or would not answer
their page and return their calls. Mayor Vincent, himself, also expressed
that there were times when he had a hard time getting in touch with the
Chief and getting his calls returned.
The conversation that the Mayor of Dayton and Mrs. Denton had on the
phone that evening gave her hope that possibly the officer was not going
to get away with treating her like this. After all, she was not the criminal
in this case, she was the victim that went to the police department on
invitation seeking help, not persecution. The mayor suggested that Mrs.
Denton come to the August Council meeting and tell her story as to get
public knowledge and encourage others who have complaints to possibly
speak out as well. With that, Mrs. Denton eagerly agreed that she would be
at the August meeting to express her concern as she was deeply affected
by what had nearly happened to her in the presence of someone she
trusted, being the police, and in a location we should all feel safe, the
police department.
Are you seeing yet how a difficult situation was made much more difficult
for the Dentons to deal with? Are you wondering yet why the police of
Dayton refused to do anything to help the Dentons? Can you now begin to
see why possibly the Dentons have the feelings they do for the officials of
Dayton? Can you now see why the Dentons were beginning to feel unsafe in
their own hometown?
Well readers, this is where I am going to stop today, because after all, I
want you to keep coming back and checking us out here at our little website
that we hope so much you are enjoying. Please click back in a day or two
and see what the Dentons do next to find justice in Dayton.
