The school clothes have been bought, the backpack is loaded with
supplies, and my kid knows which bus to catch...... The nearly six
foot somewhat hairy creature that used to be a toddler and is now
somewhere in the territory between kid and man is in high school
this year. This is the first year really I have not had to worry about
anything in the morning. He gets up on his own and is gone before I
rise for the day. It is actually nice at this stage (so far) but
sometimes when I take a moment to reflect I realize just how fast
time is really moving on me. It seems just a couple years ago when
he was in kindergarten and he would walk down our long drive, what
must have been quite a little journey for his short stumpy legs at
five years old. I remember watching him walk down the drive and
thinking how small he looked in comparison to the trees and shrubs
around him. The world just seemed to swallow him up. When the bus
would pull up before stretching his little leg up onto the bus he
would turn around and wave at me as I watched him from the porch.
He would only let me walk him to the end of the drive sometimes. I
think he felt like a big guy or something walking out there. It was
nice that the bus stopped at the end of our drive. But now, he's off
to start his day before I see him and in the evening he is tucked in
his room doing homework or spending time with friends in the
neighborhood. It seems I hardly see him. He will be working soon
which means I will see him even less. Don't get me wrong, this is a
good thing. He is becoming a man. When I reflect on how time has
passed and how quickly he has grown it also makes me realize that
while he has gotten taller, I have gotten older. Such a journey life
is but really the older I get it doesn't feel like a journey, it seems
more like a trip that before I know it, it will be over. I just hope
that when my life's journey is over and I go home, I hope home is a
good place.
